What happens after an ADHD diagnosis?
A diagnosis is an explanation and a starting point — not the end of the pathway.
The next step should be a personalised discussion about goals, support, environmental changes and treatment options.
The post-diagnosis journey
Review the report, what evidence supported the diagnosis and any coexisting needs.
Medication, non-medication support and practical adjustments can all be considered.
If medication is chosen, treatment is initiated and adjusted with monitoring.
Specialist follow-up, shared care and periodic review are considered.
Support is broader than medication
NICE recommends discussing environmental modifications and, where indicated, non-pharmacological treatment. Depending on the person, useful support may include psychoeducation, psychological interventions, workplace or education adjustments, routines, coaching-style practical strategies and support for coexisting conditions.
